Why Central Bank Speeches Move Markets More Than Rate Decisions

Rate decisions happen 8 times a year per bank. Speeches happen 60+ times a month across all banks. They're where forward guidance is shaped, where dissenting views surface, and where policymakers test market reactions before committee votes.

🏦

Forward Guidance

The next rate decision is mostly already priced. The signal is in HOW policymakers describe the path: "data-dependent", "meeting-by-meeting", "sufficient confidence". Every speech adds context.

🎙️

Dissent Surfaces Here

Hawks and doves rarely vote alone — but they speak alone. Bullard, Mester, Schnabel, Knot, Macklem: their solo speeches signal which way the committee balance is shifting before the actual vote.

Live Wire Transcripts

TNT delivers the live wire feed, not a post-speech summary. You see the policymaker's words as they cross, with hawkish/dovish tone tagging applied phrase-by-phrase, not just at the end.

📅

Squawk Audio

When you're on a chart, you don't want to refresh a feed. TNT's squawk reads HIGH-impact speech headlines aloud the moment they cross. Hands-free for the desk that's actually trading.

Every Major Central Bank Speaker Tracked

TNT covers scheduled speeches, ad-hoc press conferences, parliamentary testimony and Diet appearances. Each speaker's tone history is recorded so you can read the meeting balance in advance.

Access the dedicated central banks tracker from the TNT Pro sidebar. The panel shows all upcoming meeting dates with countdown timers, current benchmark rates and the last known tone for each bank — hawkish, dovish or neutral.

2

Follow the Decision Live

On meeting day, the news feed automatically elevates all central bank wires to the top. Rate decisions hit the feed the instant they are released — before TV, before most platforms. The squawk box reads out the decision audibly so you don't need to watch the screen.

3

Analyze the Statement & Press Conference

TNT aggregates the full policy statement text alongside analyst commentary and speech transcripts as they drop. Forward guidance, dot plot changes, inflation outlook revisions — all tagged and searchable within seconds of release.

Central Bank Speeches: Frequently Asked Questions

How many central bank speeches happen per week?

On a typical week (no blackout period), 15-25 speeches across all major central banks. In the run-up to a rate decision, that can spike to 30-40 speeches in a single week as policymakers signal positioning before the vote. Blackout periods (1-2 weeks before each decision) silence official Fed/ECB speakers but other banks continue.

Which speakers move markets the most?

Pecking order roughly: 1) Fed Chair (Powell), 2) Treasury Secretary (when commenting on FX), 3) ECB President (Lagarde), 4) BoE Governor (Bailey), 5) BoJ Governor (Ueda). After the principals, regional Fed presidents and ECB Governing Council members can move EUR/USD 30-50 pips on tone shifts.

What is a hawkish vs dovish tone?

Hawkish = favoring tighter policy (rate hikes, balance sheet runoff, harder language on inflation). Dovish = favoring easier policy (rate cuts, balance sheet expansion, softer language on inflation). Neutral = no clear lean. TNT tags each speech in real time as the wire feeds key phrases.

Why are blackout periods important?

10 days before each Fed meeting, FOMC members are required to remain silent — no public comments on monetary policy. The ECB has a 7-day quiet period. During blackouts, market positioning becomes more sensitive to data prints because policymakers can't push back on misreads.

Does TNT cover EM central bank speeches?

Yes. PBoC (China), BCB (Brazil), Banxico (Mexico), TCMB (Turkey), CBR (Russia), RBI (India) Governor speeches are all wire-tracked, with translation where the original is non-English. EM central bank communication is increasingly market-moving as their currencies trade more freely.

Data sources & editorial standards

Every speech tracked on this page is sourced directly from the speaking central bank's press office or live wire feed. We do not relay aggregated summaries from Telegram or social media accounts — every transcript link is traceable to an official source.

Tone tagging is assigned by editorial review of each speech, not by automated sentiment analysis. The wire feed delivers headlines in real time; the full transcript follows, and the tone tag is reviewed against the full text before being finalized.
