Six reasons traders pin the PRE-MKT filter

The pre-market window concentrates the highest-quality catalysts of any 5-hour slice of the trading day. Here's what you get when you filter for it.

📊

Earnings storm

~70% of S&P 500 earnings releases hit between 04:00 and 09:00 ET — companies file 8-K Item 2.02 before the call. You see the press release and the guide before the market does.

📣

Analyst rating changes

Sell-side desks publish upgrade/downgrade notes between 05:00 and 07:30 ET — well before the cash open. Catching a downgrade at 05:30 can save you 5% on a 09:30 sell.

🏥

FDA decisions

FDA approvals, AdCom votes, and CRLs publish during US business hours but most often before the open. Single-day moves of 50-300% on small-cap biotech are normal here.

🤝

M&A announcements

Deals are announced pre-market to give the market a full session to digest. 8-K Item 1.01 filings — surfaced here in seconds.

📈

Macro prints

CPI, PPI, NFP, retail sales — all 08:30 ET. The 1-minute reaction in equity futures sets the tone for the entire session.

🚨

Guidance updates

Mid-quarter guidance updates (pre-announcements, profit warnings) tend to land between 06:30 and 08:30 ET to maximise distribution to overnight news desks.

How to actually trade the pre-market

Pre-market is a different beast from cash hours. Lower liquidity, wider spreads, gap setups instead of trends. Three workflow patterns that work consistently.

The morning routine

If you trade for a living and your day starts at 04:00 ET, the pre-market routine is the day. Three phases:

  1. 04:00–06:30 ET — earnings scan. Open the PRE-MKT filter, sort by ticker price impact. Most earnings releases land in this window. You're not trading yet — you're building your watchlist of names that moved 3%+ on the print.
  2. 06:30–08:30 ET — analyst + macro prep. Analyst notes, macro data preview, futures direction. Refine your watchlist down to 4-8 names with the cleanest gap setups.
  3. 08:30–09:30 ET — sizing + entry plan. CPI/jobs data prints at 08:30. Final hour to size positions, set stop levels, plan entry. By 09:25 you should know exactly what you're buying or shorting at 09:30 and at what size.

The PRE-MKT filter compresses all the pre-market noise into the signals you need to execute the routine. Without it, you're scrolling through 80% Asia/Europe news to find the 20% US catalysts.

The gap setup

Most edges in single-name day trading live in the first hour after the open. The cleanest setups are continuation or reversal of overnight gaps, where the gap is driven by an identifiable pre-market catalyst:

  • Gap-and-go (continuation): Earnings beat + raised guide → stock gaps +8% overnight → continuation if volume confirms in the first 15 minutes. Trade the first pullback to VWAP with a tight stop.
  • Gap fade (reversal): Earnings beat + flat guide → stock gaps +6% overnight → fades because the beat was already priced in. Short the failed breakout above the pre-market high.
  • Gap-and-flag (consolidation): M&A target gaps +30% to cash deal price → trades flat to the deal close. Avoid — no edge unless you have arb infrastructure.

The catalyst quality determines the setup. The PRE-MKT filter is how you triage which catalyst you're looking at.

The macro overlay

Most pre-market catalysts are single-name. But once a month, the catalyst is macro:

  • CPI day (mid-month, 08:30 ET): Equity futures move 1-2% in either direction in the first 60 seconds. Single names lose the spotlight — the index direction is the trade.
  • NFP day (first Friday of month, 08:30 ET): Similar magnitude. Treasury yields move first, equity follows.
  • FOMC day (8x/year, 14:00 ET decision, but pre-market has the lead-in): Pre-market is quiet but the press release at 14:00 ET drives the closing 2 hours.

The PRE-MKT filter still shows you the macro print at 08:30 — but the trade context shifts from single names to index futures.

How to use PRE-MKT in TNT

The PRE-MKT badge sits next to PRO, AFTER-HRS, SEC EDGAR, and the asset chips in the search bar. One click activates the filter — the feed dims everything outside 04:00–09:30 ET and items inside the window get a coloured PRE-MKT tag. Click again to deactivate. Combine with a watchlist filter to see only pre-market catalysts on your names. Pro: customise the window start to 02:00 ET (Asia handoff) or 06:00 ET (CME direction) under Settings → News Filter.

Liquidity caveats

Pre-market liquidity is 5-20% of cash session liquidity. Spreads are wide. Some practical rules:

  • Use limit orders only. Market orders in pre-market regularly fill 1-3% off the last print.
  • Half your normal size. You're not getting the cash-session fills, so size like it.
  • Avoid low-volume names. If average daily volume is below 1M shares, the pre-market is a graveyard. Wait for the open.
  • Don't trust pre-market prints as support/resistance. They get overwritten in the first 5 minutes of cash. Use prior-day cash levels.

Why a filter is better than a separate feed

Some terminals run a separate "pre-market news" panel. Two reasons we built this as a filter on the main feed instead:

  • Context. When you see an SMCI 8-K at 04:31 ET, you also want to see the 18:14 ET 8-K from yesterday that previewed it. A filter preserves that continuity — a separate panel breaks it.
  • One UI, every market regime. Same chips, same search, same alerts — works for pre-market, regular hours, after-hours, weekend, doesn't matter. You don't relearn the UI when the clock changes.

If you want pre-market data segregated, click the chip. If you want continuity, don't. Your choice every morning.

Combining PRE-MKT with other filters

The PRE-MKT chip is exclusive on big chips but combines cleanly with small chips:

  • PRE-MKT + watchlist: Only pre-market catalysts on your tickers.
  • PRE-MKT + EARNINGS: Only earnings releases inside the pre-market window (eliminates after-hours earnings).
  • PRE-MKT + 8-K: Only 8-K filings inside the pre-market window.
  • PRE-MKT + SEC EDGAR: Combined SEC filings in pre-market only.

The combo is where the workflow speed comes from. PRE-MKT + watchlist + audio squawk (Pro) is the trader's morning room set up in 3 clicks.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Pre-Market News Feed?

A filtered view of the news terminal showing only items published between 04:00 and 09:30 ET. One click on the PRE-MKT chip activates the filter; the rest of the feed dims and items inside the window get a coloured tag.

Why does the pre-market window matter?

More than 60% of overnight catalysts (earnings beats, guidance updates, M&A, FDA, analyst calls) hit the wires between 04:00 ET and 09:30 ET. Those catalysts drive the gap on open — and gaps are where the highest-R/R day trading setups live.

What sources feed into the pre-market window?

SEC EDGAR (8-K filings), PRNewswire, BusinessWire, GlobeNewswire, FDA press announcements, analyst rating changes from major desks, and breaking news from major US business wires.

How fast is the feed?

SEC 8-K appears within seconds of EDGAR publishing. Press wires within 10-30 seconds. FDA approvals within seconds. The pre-market filter doesn't add latency — it's a visual gate on the same real-time feed.

Can I customise the window?

Default is 04:00–09:30 ET. Pro users can adjust the start to 02:00 ET (Asia–Europe handoff) or 06:00 ET (CME futures direction) depending on workflow.

Is this feature free?

Yes — the PRE-MKT toggle is free on Basic with the standard news feed. Pro adds custom window times, watchlist-only filtering inside the window, audio squawk, and Telegram alerts.

Does this work for European pre-market?

The PRE-MKT badge is US-specific. For European pre-market (06:00–08:00 UK time) use the EUROPE chip. Asian pre-market has a similar treatment under the ASIA chip.
